Buying second hand is one easy and straightforward way to save money when you want to buy some new additions. Some people can be quite hesitant about purchasing items second hand, so we have complied a list of items that are perfectly safe to buy pre-loved.

Buying pre-loved furniture can add character to your home like a lot of modern pieces won't! Often you will also find that wooden second hand furniture is of a higher quality than what you can find in most commercial furniture stores. Be sure to check the sturdiness of any chairs and tables before buying them to assess whether they are safe to use, or if you can fix them easily in need be.

Second hand crockery is a great investment, and can be easily cleaned by running it through a hot cycle in the dishwasher. Instead of paying an arm and a leg for plates and cups, check your local second hand store, or online!

Clothing and Shoes

Second hand clothing (besides intimates and swimwear) is very easy to sanitise before wearing, and will save you mountains of cash. Simply run the clothes through the washing machine on a high temperature, and dry in the sun before wearing. You may want to bleach any white clothes as well, to give them that fresh look. Some shoes are able to be washed in the machine as well, but if not, give them a spray with disinfectant or pure alcohol spray and leave them int he sun for a day. Good as new!

Books are one of the best things to buy pre-loved. There's nothing more calming than taking a stroll around a used bookstore on the weekend, and when you're finished reading, you can often bring them back for store credit. What's not to love!?

For some reason, plant pots are always ridiculously expensive. So why not look for some that are second hand? Lots of larger op shops will have some pots up for grabs for a fraction of the price that you'll see them in a garden store.
