1.    Get a Plan

Not feeling in control is a huge cause of stress.  Seeing your debt go up, having debt collectors call you and not being able to do anything about it, is one of the most stressful things a person can experience. I’ve been in some negative situations, but I found that all my stress evaporated as soon as there was a plan.  To reduce your stress, you need a plan and take some steps.

2.    Stop Digging

Your financial situation deteriorating is guaranteed to increase your stress.  A growing credit card balance or another payday loan is sure to cause depression. You have to stop digging.  Call up and cancel your credit cards. Don’t get another payday loan.

3.    Go for a Run (do some exercise)

Exercise releases hormones that can elevate mood. While the advice to sleep more is great, the reality is if you’re really stressed it can be difficult to sleep. This problem isn’t present with exercise. 30 mins of exercise has been shown to assist with depression and reduce the likelihood of developing a mental illness. It also helps you sleep.

4.    Go easy on the caffeine and alcohol/drugs

If you’re stressed, alcohol can be very tempting.  If you’re not sleeping drinking a lot of caffeine can also be tempting. However, both alcohol and caffeine have been shown to exacerbate anxiety and depression. In other words, they make stress worse.

5.    Get other things in order

If you’ve got money problems, you probably won’t be able to solve it overnight.  It’s going to be a medium-term project. That can be a bit demotivating. Getting other things in your life in order can reduce your overall stress levels.   Simple things like tidying your home, developing a weekly plan, a weekly menu, decluttering your wardrobe, can contribute to lowering stress.
