1. Ask your friends

Friends and family will often have pieces of furniture they are just waiting to get rid of. Most pieces of furniture are too large to simply throw away, which can mean people will hold on to them long term. That is, of course, until someone like you offers to take them off their hands! You might be surprised how many things you can pick up for free or a carton of beer.

2. Check out Gumtree

Gumtree has many, many listings for no longer wanted furniture, often including pieces that are in great condition. Some people will even deliver the pieces to you if you don't have access to a ute or a trailer.

3. Use Facebook

The fairly new addition to Facebook, Marketplace, is growing fast, and possibly has even more items listed than Gumtree. It works in the same way in that you can search your area and surrounds for specific items.

Another way you can use Facebook is to join 'buy, swap and sell' groups in your area. This can be another great way to purchase affordable second hand furniture. Some people even give away items for free if you collect them yourself.

4. Look at your local Op Shop

The larger op shops will have furniture for sale for a fraction of the price it would have been new. The benefit of op shopping for furniture is you might find something very unique that nobody else has!

5. Check the clearance section

Large department stores like Kmart and Target will often have clearance sections towards the back of the store. You might find discounted furniture that has been slightly damaged or may be missing a screw. Think carefully about purchasing these products, however. Is it damaged badly? Could you repaint it to fix it? Can you buy a replacement screw? Be careful not to just buy it because it's cheap!

6. Second hand furniture stores

Lots of people may not know there are some stores dedicated to reselling used furniture. The benefit to buying second hand furniture from a store is that the pieces will be in good condition. The downside however, is they will often be more expensive, which is why we've put in at the bottom of the list.

Happy shopping!
