Building a new wardrobe can be expensive. Whether it's for a new job, a new season, or a new start, there are lots of ways to update your wardrobe for cheap. Instead of a shopping spree, have a go at making some changes and additions on your own before hitting the shops. We have a few pointers that will give you somewhere to start.

Accessories

Adding new accessories to your wardrobe are a cheap way to update your existing outfits. Whether it be hats, ties, jewellery, or shoes, changing one aspect of an outfit will make more of a difference than you think! Instead of shelling out for new clothing pieces, head to the accessory isle and have a look there! You may also like to check out Gumtree, eBay, or secondhand shops for pre-loved pieces!

Mix and match

Take a look at the outfits you would usually put together and turn them on their head. Mix and match your existing wardrobe until you find some combinations that you haven't worn before. This is an overlooked way to shop your own closet and make use of what you already have!

Upcycle and recycle

Many of us will have clothes in the back of our wardrobes that have been there for months of years that we don't reach for any more. They might be broken, stained, out of fashion, or simply not our style anymore. There are a few ways you can give new lift to these pieces and avoid throwing them out.

Repair

First, look at repairing any damaged items. Rips and tears can be quite hard to fix, but reattaching a button or resewing a seam are very simple fixes that will give new life to your clothes. If repairing them looks to be beyond your skill set, consider taking them to a tailor for proper fixing. It will be cheaper than buying something new.

Alter clothing

Something else you can do with these old clothes is alter and update them. There are many simple DIYs you can do with limited sewing skills. You could add patches to a denim jacked or jeans for a new look, or convert an old skirt into a bag. Have a look online for easy clothing DIY projects, you will find thousands!

Tidy your closet regularly

A tidy spaces helps a tidy mind, so be sure to look after your wardrobe. Sort your clothing out, and put away items that aren't in season. If you are regularly going through your closet, you will always know what you have, and avoid buying double ups. Put your most worn clothing somewhere accessible, and your special occasion pieces at the back.

If you find some old pieces in your wardrobe that you haven't worn, consider keeping them in a box or on a shelf for the next time you want to undergo some DIY and revamp your closet!

Coupons and sales

If you do decide to make a few purchases, look for the sales! When buying online, always make sure to do a search for discount coupons before checking out. Even a small saving of 10% can make a difference. Similarly, if you shop in store, go during big sales (the best times are between seasons) to save the most money you can.

If you have a creative flair, or want to learn a new hobby, it might be time to start sewing! This opens up a whole new world of possibilities, where you can make your own clothes, or do advanced alterations on your existing clothing.
