There's a common misconception that living on a budget is boring and will rob you of all your fun. It can be difficult, especially if you have little ones to entertain, to find fun things to do on the weekends if you're on a tight budget. We have collected seven fun activities you can do for free!

walk hike family free activity

1. Go for a walk or hike

There's always somewhere new to explore, even close to home! Hiking isn't for everyone, and it certainly isn't for small children, so pick a route best for you. You may want to climb a local mountain, or simply walk a few blocks in your neighbourhood. Getting outside has many health benefits and can make you feel refreshed and reset, especially after a day indoors. Just before the sun sets can be a beautiful time to get outside and see the beautiful skies Australia has to show this time of year. Make it your mission to take a few snaps - this can add to the fun!

2. Pack a picnic

Pack up the food you would have had for breakfast or lunch and take them in to the great outdoors. A picnic can be a fun way to mix things up on the weekend, and doesn't have to cost you anything more than your usual grocery bill. Be careful not to get sucked in to buying specialty snacks or pretty baskets to take with you - chances are you have everything you need at home already!

free museum gallery

3. Visit a museum or gallery

This free activity is always overlooked. In most cities and towns there will be at least one museum for you to explore. Art galleries will often feature new exhibits a few times a year, so this is one activity you can revisit again and again!

4. Be a tourist in your town

If you've lived in the same town for a time, the chances are you think you've seen it all. You might even be a little bored of it. But there is always something new to see, or a part you haven't visited. Do some research into what tourists and visitors do in your town and get the chance to explore with fresh eyes! If you live in a city, visit a suburb you've never seen before, or take the train to the last stop. You could also look up free walking tours of your town and brush up on your local knowledge!

free activity sunrise

5. Watch the sunrise

Watching the sun rise (or set if you're more of a night owl) can be a refreshing and grounding experience. It's amazing how watching the world wake up can make you feel. Find a viewing spot, bring along some hot coffee from home, and enjoy!

6. Surround yourself with nature

Australia is a beautiful country with beaches, desert, mountains, lakes, islands, and bush. Get outside and amongst your local outdoor sights! It is free to visit national parks, and you might find there's one much closer than you thought! Some of these parks have hikes or even water holes, where you can take a free dip!

free transport ferry

7. Make the most of free transport

Lots of cities have a free mode of transport, whether that be tram, train, or ferry. Do some research on what's available near you. Take a free trip to a cool new location, or simply sit back and watch the world go past.
