Everyone's favourite aspect of tax time is, of course, deductibles! We all want to claim all the deductibles they can, but what are we eligible for? We have collected a list of deductibles that you might be eligible for! Just remember to always consult an accountant to check what deductions you're eligible for.
If travel is necessary for your job, and you have the required documentation for the Australian Tax Office (ATO), you may be eligible to claim travel expenses as a deductible.
If you need tools of equipment in order to complete your job, you may be able to claim the price of replacing, insuring, and repairing them. Please note that the value of all equipment and tools must be depreciated.
Compulsory uniforms that are specific and branded may be deductible, as are costs incurred for laundering and repairing work clothing. If you work in a clothing store and are required to wear clothing from your store to work, the cost incurred is not deductible.
If you need to purchase books or manuals in order to keep your knowledge up to date for your job, the cost of these books may be deductible.
If you have a space in your home dedicated to work use, you may be able to claim certain expenses you incur, including, but not limited to:
Keep a record for a minimum of four weeks that documents the use of your home office.
If you work outdoors in the sun, you may be eligible to claim deductions on the cost of sun protection items such as sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses.
You may be eligible to claim the cost of new technology items that you require for work, however it is unlikely that you will be able to claim the entire cost in one year. You may be able to spread the claim across the life of the item, taking into account depreciation.
Be sure to double check with a qualified tax agent before claiming any deductibles!
