There are many purchases we will make based on the hype around them, temporary excitement while in the shops, or because they seem to promise us a better life. Here are a list of six things we think you should question before purchasing, as more often than not, they will not live up to the hype.

1. Novelty Flavoured Snacks

We have a tendency to get very excited when one of our favourite snacks brings out a new flavour. Take Oreos and their multiple novelty flavours, for example. The new flavours are often not as good as the original, and you will usually find yourself paying more for them. Additionally, there will often be a release of multiple flavours at once, which can persuade you to buy four packets when you would usually only buy one! Brands rely on the hype and excitement of customers to move these products from the shelves, so next time you see your usual after dinner treat now comes in salted caramel and birthday cake flavour, think twice before putting it into your basket.

2. Flowers with Short Lifespans

Fresh flowers can absolutely brighten up a room, or someone’s day, but do your research before grabbing the first bunch on display at the supermarket! Buying flowers at a farmer’s market will often be cheaper, if you have access and the ability to get to one. Additionally, knowing which flowers last the longest can save you money! Freesias, chrysanthemums, and carnations are among the longest lasting cut flowers, and will brighten up your home without turning into a brown sludgy mess within a few days.

3. Gym or Fitness Memberships

We will often buy gym or fitness memberships with good intentions. In the new year, after we have vowed to get fit as a New Year’s resolution, or after reading a blog or a book about how someone turned their life around and became healthier and fitter in a year. But, unfortunately, these memberships will often go unused. We recommend buying a short term pass first to see if you really use if. Although they are more expensive per month, you won’t be committing to a contract of a year or longer. Make sure you are committed to attending the gym before making a long term membership purchase.

4. Specific Shoes or Accessories

Often we will feel the need to purchase a specific pair of shoes or accessory to go with one specific outfit for an occasion. These accessories then sit in our cupboards gathering dust, never to be worn again. We recommend keeping this in mind when buying shoes and accessories. Sticking to neutral colours will mean you will be able to mix and match your accessories with multiple different outfits for lots of occasions. Beyond this, you could consider building a capsule wardrobe, meaning that all your clothing and accessories will coordinate and will be able to be worn in any combination.

5. Items that are ‘Too Pretty’ to Use

We will often buy kitchen, bathroom, or work supplies that we love the look of, but may not be very functional. Candles are the perfect example of this. Some of us will stockpile pretty, often overpriced, candles that we will never burn because they are too beautiful. The same goes for some beauty products, like lotions. Sometimes beautiful packaging will be the main reason for purchase, and we might feel that to use the product would be a ‘waste’. We recommend keeping in mind that products are meant to be used, and if you find yourself ‘saving’ special products like this, it might be best to avoid the pretty ones and buy something more stock standard.

6. Multiple Hair Products (usually from your hairdresser)

Hairdressers are often instructed to recommend multiple products to their clients by management, or by the salon owner. But most of us don’t have time to use deep conditioners and multiple styling products every day. Remember to be realistic when making purchases. Be honest with yourself about whether you will actually use the products, and if the answer is no, don’t buy them. They will always be there next time if you later change your mind.
